MENGHAM Rythe Sailing Club member, Chris Sharland, was presented with a half-model of his Cornish Shrimper "Shellback" as a thank you for the 15 years he has been the voluntary secretary of the Chichester & Solent Shrimper Owners Association.
There are 38 Cornish Shrimpers registered in the Solent and 48 in Chichester Harbour, seven of which are moored at MRSC.

The Cornish Shrimper is a 19ft classic-style sailing boat with a gaff rig and either an inboard or outboard engine.

They are a joy to see pottering in Chichester Harbour with their traditional brown sails. Chris (pictured) has been a member of MRSC since 1963 where he started sailing in a variety of dinghies, before buying his Shrimper in 1985.

He was presented with the half-model from his fellow Shrimper owners in Chichester Harbour and the Solent at the end of season lunch held at the Oyster Quay on the Hamble River on October 19.

As secretary of the local branch of the National Shrimper Owners Association, each year Chris has organised regular meetings, sailing rallies and week long cruises for the Shrimpers in Chichester Harbour and around the Solent.

Chris normally sails his boat single-handed and his longest solo trip was last year when he organised a rally to Littlehampton.

Now in his late 70s Chris has decided to retire as the local secretary and hand over the job to a younger person.

He said: "I have no plans to stop sailing my Shrimper and I will continue taking part in local sailing events."
