On a night when a bittery cold wind sent temperatures plummeting the fans saw plenty of drama with a sending off, a penalty and extra time.
It was the kind of weather that may make the FA's insistence on covered shelter for fans seem sensible (see
page one) even if it threatens to make a nonsense of the club's finances.
Petersfield's Liam Bray scored from the edge of the box midway through the second-half. But the visitors' Brad Grant was sent off for using foul language minutes after skying a sitter that would have sealed it.
Hayling's numerical advantage paid off with 12 minutes left as they converted from the penalty spot after a foul near the byline.
Both keepers had to pull off good saves in extra time. But Petersfield regained the lead after 115 minutes when James Tiffin's shot squirmed under the keeper's dive and into the net.
Bray wrapped it up five minutes later firing in from close range to book a trip to Gosport Borough.
Hayling had suffered back-to-back league defeats 72 hours earlier when losing 3-1 at Hamworthy United.
Pete Murphy netted from the spot to level in the first half but the visitors were quickly behind as Tony Harrop's mistake in the Hayling goal gifted the hosts a second.
A third goal 20 minutes from time meant a double disappointment in Dorset.
Hayling had booked a trip to Bemerton Heath in the League cup with a 4-2 win over the same opposition – also at the College Ground.
Dan Hayes and Murphy gave the Humbugs an early lead but the visitors pegged Matt Parr's men back only for top scorer Graham Lindsey to restore the lead. An own goal ensured no more surprises for the hosts.
After a great September, Parr's side found out how tough life can be even in the top half of the Wessex Premier as they lost 3-0 at league leaders Poole Town, who kept their unbeaten record on October 18.
Parr blamed a cup hangover after their great win over AFC Totton in the Hampshire Senior Cup for a sloppy start at Romsey, a week earlier, where they were held to a 2-2 draw.
Jimmy Cuthbert levelled straight after the restart only for United to fall behind again. Lindsey rescued a point two minutes into stoppage time.
Lindsey had put United in the driving seat against Southern League side Totton four days earlier with two goals inside the first 10 minutes, having missed an early penalty when it was 0-0.
Totton grabbed a goal just before the interval but a strong attacking second half display failed to bring any more goals.
Hayling now face New Milton in the FA Vase Second Round at the College Ground on November 15, after a stunning 3-0 win over Brading on October 4, which made it six straight wins for the Humbugs.
Lindsey grabbed another brace in the second-half – the second from the penalty spot – after Nathan Kirby had given his team the lead six minutes after the interval.
League fixtures: Nov 8 Alresford T (h); 11 VTFC (h); 18 Fareham T (h); 22 Bournemouth (a).
